To get the siphon to work you must fill the barrel of the siphon and hose with water. Do this by holding both ends of the siphon in your hands and over your aquarium, dip the barrel into the water filling it. Slowly lift the filled barrel of the siphon out of the water filling the hose. When the hose is filled stop the water flow from the hose with your finger, refill the siphon barrel and your ready to start siphoning your gravel.

The most effective way to use your gravel siphon is to start in one corner of your aquarium push the gravel siphon into the gravel all the way to the bottom. Release your finger from the hose allowing water and detritus to flow up through the siphon into your bucket. As the water clears of detritus lift the siphon barrel up and move over just a little bit and start the process again. Continue moving and siphoning your gravel bed untill you have cleaned the bottom of your tank. If you see that you are removing to much water from your aquarium use your finger on the hose as a valve slowing down the flow of water.
