Reptile Care

Common Name: Mountain Lizard
Scientific Name: Japalura flaviceps
Distribution: Indonesia to China
Size: 10" - 12"

This arboreal lizard is native to the tropical rain forests of Indonesia. Males can become territorial, separate from other males. Hyperactive and hard to hold. Most will become tame with regular handling.

Captive Environment:
Adults, when kept in captivity should be provided a 29 gallon enclosure. Use shredded coconut husks, reptile bark or reptile carpet as substrates. Change substrates often to prevent molds or as they become soiled. Provide a basking area with access to a cooler zone. Provide several climbing areas on branches, logs, &. plants.
Lighting:
Full-Spectrum lighting that emit UVB is a must for captive reptiles. Reptiles depend on ultra-violet light (B) to synthesize vitamin D3, which regulates calcium absorption in the intestine. A full-spectrum light should be positioned less than 18" from your pet for maximum effect. Glass blocks ultraviolet light and should never be used as an enclosure top. 12 hours of light, and 12 hour of dark is a good starting cycle for your reptile.
Temperature:
Day temperature should be from 78-85 degrees F. Maintain night temperature range between 65-70 degrees F. There are several methods for establishing the proper temperature range for your reptile. Using spotlights of variable wattage incandescent bulbs on the outside of the enclosure, under tank heaters or heat rocks or any combination of these. When using spotlights for 24 hour heat use red, night bulbs or a ceramic heating element to maintain day / night light cycle.
Never place lights inside the enclosure where the reptile could come in contact with them and get burned. Use a thermometer to ensure proper temperature range is maintained.
Water:
Provide a large shallow bowl for drinking and soaking. This species requires moderate to high levels of humidity. Mist enclosure daily.
Food:
This species is a carnivore (meat eater). Always offer variety for proper nutrition. Eats variety of larger worms (earthworms, meal/wax worms) Dust food with calcium and vitamins. Crickets are an excellent choice for using the dusting technique.
