Common Name: Ornate Horn Frog, Pacman Frog
Scientific Name: Ceratophrys ornata
Adult Size: 4" to 6"
Distribution: Argentina
Ornate Horn Frog are indigenous to tropical forest and woodland areas near ponds and swamp areas. Ornate Horn Frogs are
usually tame but frequent handling could stress the frog, have been known to nip when threatened. You should keep
separated, larger frogs have been known to eat smaller frogs. Always wash your hands before and after handling your frog.
Captive Environment:
An adult Ornate Horn Frog will require at least a 10 gallon aquarium. Suitable substrates for your frog’s home include
moist reptile soil, reptile bark or shredded coconut husks deep enough for the frog to burrow in. Do not use gravel as a substrate.
Pacman frogs can eat small rocks when they are trying to catch their food, this can cause an impaction and lead to death.
Temperature:
Provide a temperature range of 78-83 °F during the day and in the mid to high 70's°F at night. You can use an under tank
heat pad to help regulate the temperature 24 hours a day. Use a thermometer to ensure proper temperature range is
maintained.
Lighting:
UVB emitting full spectrum lighting is optional for your nocturnal reptile. However it may prove to be beneficial to the long term care of your pet reptile. The light should be positioned less than 18" from your pet for maximum effect. Glass blocks ultraviolet light, and air circulation, therefore it should never be used as a top for the enclosure. A 12- hour day/ night lighting cycle is a good start for your pet reptile. Using a timer is the best way to ensure that the proper amount of light is received.
Food:
Ornate Horn Frogs are carnivores. Their primary diet consists of crickets, small mice, feeder fish, meal worms, earth worms and just about anything else it can fit into its mouth. DO NOT LEAVE THE CRICKETS IN THE CAGE FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. You should dust your frog’s food with a vitamin/mineral supplement.
Water:
A bowl of clean, de-chlorinated water should always be available. Change water every day with de-chlorinated water. Change more often if the water appears dirty. Frogs do not drink water, they absorb it through their skin, therefore a water dish should be provided that is large enough for the animal to easily get in and out of. This species requires high levels of humidity.
