Common Name: Stripe-knee Tarantula
Scientific Name: Aphonopelma seemanni
Adult Size: 5" to 6"
Distribution: Central America
Recommended Expertise Level: Intermediate to Advanced
Temperament: Stripe-knee tarantulas are venomous and quick. Handle at your own risk! Keep separated.
Captive Environment:
An adult Stripe-knee tarantula will require at least a 5gallon aquarium. Stripe-knees require dark hiding places and a thick layer of moist reptile soil mixes or shredded coconut husks that you spot clean with every feeding. Stripe-knees are avid borrowers. You will probably have better luck getting them to accept an artificial burrow as opposed to burrowing there own.
Temperature:
Stripe-knee tarantulas are indigenous to the grassland of Central America; therefore, it's crucial that they be provided a temperature range of 78-83°F during the day and in the mid to high 70's°F at night. This is necessary for the tarantula's metabolism and immune system to function properly. Use an under tank heat pad on one side of the aquarium. Always use a thermometer to ensure proper temperature range is maintained.
Food:
Stripe-knee tarantulas are carnivores. Their primary diet consists of crickets and meal worms. Will also eat pinkies, small lizards and small snakes. DO NOT LEAVE THE CRICKETS IN THE CAGE FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. If possible gut load feeder animals and insects before introducing.
Water:
Provide a small shallow bowl with saturated sponge for drinking, and also mist the enclosure every other day for moisture and moderate humidity. They should also be kept at moderate to high levels of humidity.

*Please note that ALL tarantulas have a certain amount of venom. Although most people are not affected by this species, some people may be allergic to the venom, or just more sensitive, making it a dangerous situation. Also, New World species of tarantulas like this one can rub urticating hairs off of their abdomens, which can also cause a reaction, depending on the person. Affects of these tarantulas' natural defenses may vary between people. If it comes in contact with eyes seek medical attention.
