Reptile Care

Common Name: Tokay Gecko
Scientific Name: Gekko gecko
Distribution: S.E. Asia - Korea & Japan
Size: 9" - 14"

This arboreal gecko is from the sub-tropical forests of Asia. Males can become territorial, separate from other males. This species is nocturnal (active primarily at night). This gecko is very aggressive.
Captive Environment:
Dense foliage is required when kept in captivity and adults require a 10 gallon enclosure. Provide a basking area with access to a cooler zone. Use reptile soil mixes, reptile bark, shredded coconut husks or reptile carpet as substrates. Spot clean as needed, and replace at least monthly. Provide several climbing areas with branches, logs, live or artificial plants.
Temperature:
Day temperature should be between 78 to 88 degrees F, Maintain night temperature range between 70-75 degrees F. There are several methods for establishing the proper temperature range for your reptile. Using spotlights of variable wattage incandescent bulbs on the outside of the enclosure, under tank heaters or heat rocks or any combination of these. Never place lights inside the enclosure where the reptile could come in contact with them and get burned. When using spotlights for 24 hour heat, use red, night bulbs or a ceramic heating element to maintain day / night light cycle. Use a thermometer to ensure proper temperature range is maintained.
Lighting:
UVB emitting full spectrum lighting is optional for your nocturnal reptile. However it may prove to be beneficial to the long term care of your pet reptile. To view your lizard during its waking hours, use a red or night light bulb. The light should be positioned less than 18" from your pet for maximum effect. Glass blocks ultraviolet light, and air circulation, therefore it should never be used as a top for the enclosure. A 12- hour day/ night lighting cycle is a good start for your pet reptile. Using a timer is the best way to ensure that the proper amount of light is received.
Humidity:
This species requires moderate levels of humidity.
Water:
Use only a small water bowl for drinking.
Food:
This species is a carnivore (meat eater). Dust food with calcium and vitamins. Likes crickets and wax worms. Also eats small insects.
